Michael
Soylular has been the head coach and director of Laguna Beach
Volleyball Club for the past 19 years. Coach Soylular has successfully
coached both the boys and girls teams at Laguna Beach High School Where he
guided both teams to the Pacific Coast League title. During this time,
the high school girls won the CIF Championship in 1991 and went to the
1992 CIF Finals. They also went to the State Finals in 1992, Semifinals
in 1993, and the Quarterfinals in 1994. Not to be outdone, the boys
also went to the CIF Quarterfinals in 1992, the Semifinals in 1993, and
the Finals in 1994. Overall, his high school teams have won league
titles nine times. Eighteen f his school players have gone on to play
collegiate volleyball.
Coach
Soylular came to Laguna Beach
from the college coaching ranks. He was an assistant coach at the University of Virginia. Prior to that, he
spent three years as an assistant for the women and head coach for the
men at Cal Poly Pomona where he completed his Masters Degree in Sports
Administration in 1990. During this time, the women's team qualified
for the NCAA playoff in 1987-88.
He
is a graduate of the University
of Arkansas at Little Rock,
where he served as the woman's coach from 1982-86 with an overall
record of 124-25, earning NAIA District Coach of the Year honors in
1985 and 1986. During those years, UALR finished fifth at the NAIA
Nationals both years. The men's team at Little Rock compiled an impressive
27-7 record, including Trans-American Athletic Conference titles in
1985 and 1986. He also served as assistant coach at Wichita State
during the 1986-87 season. He has been involved with volleyball,
playing and coaching for the past 40 years.
As
an active member of the US Volleyball Association since 1980, he has
played in several USVBA Nationals and has spent four years in
professional volleyball playing the European circuit. In addition to
all his club volleyball duties, Michael is married and has two young
daughters “ Kara and Sara”
