Coach Shellsy Ashen enters her 5th season at Laguna Beach VBC. Coach Shellsy is yet another LBVBC alumna (2005-2011) whom we were thrilled to see enjoy a successful Division I volleyball career and then rejoin the Laguna Family to pass along her knowledge to a new generation of players.
Coming from a volleyball family, Coach Shellsy began her volleyball career early. Known for possessing a high volleyball IQ and strong hands, she quickly took to the role of setter. At the high school level, she competed for Dana Hills High School where she earned All-League honors (2009, 2010) and was named to the Orange County All-Star Team. Meanwhile, at the club level she competed for LBVBC for six seasons, setting her team to a USAV National Championship at the Open level in 2008. Following her successful high school and club careers, Coach Shellsy went on to attend and compete for the indoor and sand volleyball teams at the University of Oregon. While there where she helped the indoor team reach to 2012 National Championship Finals. At the University of Oregon Coach Shellsy also excelled at her studies, earning Pac-12 All-Academic honors three times.
Coach Shellsy earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology from the University of Oregon (2014). She currently teaches oceanography/marine biology at Santa Margarita Catholic High School and coaches the girls frosh/soph team and sand volleyball program. Last season Coach Shellsy and her 12’s team finished 6th overall in the SCVA and took 5th at the AAU Girls National Championships in Orlando, FL. Year after year she continues to be a great role model for her players and prepare them to not only be successful in their current volleyball season, but beyond.
